Subaru Key Types — Which One Do You Have?
Subaru has used several key types across its range. The type your Subaru uses determines both the cost and the complexity of replacement.
Transponder Keys (pre-2016 Impreza, Forester, Liberty)
Older Subarus use a metal-blade transponder key with an embedded chip. These are the most affordable Subarus to replace in Sydney.
Flip / Remote Keys (2010–2017 Forester, Outback, XV)
Many mid-era Subarus use a flip key with an integrated remote. The remote is programmed alongside the transponder chip.
Subaru Keyless Access Smart Keys (2015+)
Recent Forester, Outback, XV and Impreza models use Subaru's Keyless Access proximity key with push-button start. These cost more to replace but a Sydney specialist can program them without a dealer visit.

From around 2015, most Subaru models moved to the Keyless Access proximity smart key with push-button start — covering the current Forester, Outback, XV and Impreza. These are more involved to program than older transponder keys, but a Sydney specialist handles them on site without a dealer booking. Older Imprezas and Foresters use a simpler transponder or flip key, which is quicker and cheaper to replace.

Genuine Subaru Keys vs Aftermarket — What's the Difference?
A genuine Subaru key is the original part at the original price. A quality aftermarket key uses the same transponder protocol and programs to your car's immobiliser identically, usually at 40–50% less. For most daily drivers the aftermarket key is the sensible choice — it starts the car, locks the doors and works with the immobiliser exactly the same. A genuine part can be worth the premium on lease returns or near-new cars under warranty. A good specialist offers both and tells you honestly when the genuine part isn't worth it.
